This Privacy Policy explains how Rutgers RUMobile ("Company," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, stores, and discloses information when you use the RUMobile mobile application and any related websites, features, and services (together, the "App").
By downloading, accessing, or using the App, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this Privacy Policy, do not use the App.
This Privacy Policy is part of, and is governed by, our Terms of Use. Capitalized terms that are not defined here have the meanings given in the Terms of Use.
Not affiliated with Rutgers. RUMobile is an independent app. It is not owned, operated, sponsored, or endorsed by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, or any of its schools, departments, or affiliates.
1. Summary
This summary is for convenience only. The full Privacy Policy below controls.
- We do not sell your personal information. We do not rent it, trade it, or "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising. The App shows no third-party advertising.
- We use a small number of service providers to run the App. These include our authentication and email provider, our database host, and our analytics providers. They process data on our behalf and only to provide their services to us. See Section 5.
- Many features work without an account. Your saved classes, bus stops, and preferences stay on your device.
- If you create an account: we store your email address and the profile you choose to create. Other signed-in users can see your public profile. Messages you post in Rutgers Global are visible to other users and are automatically deleted about 5 days after they are posted.
- We use analytics to understand how the App is used, find bugs, and improve features. This includes recordings of in-app sessions. Fields such as your email, password, and name are masked from those recordings. With Google signals, Google Analytics also gives us aggregated demographic and interest reports. See Section 2.3.
- You control what you share. Anything you post, or put in your public profile, can be seen, copied, screenshotted, or shared by other users. We are not responsible for what other users do with information you choose to share. See Section 8.
- The App is only for people 18 or older. See Section 11.
- You can delete your account at any time from within the App. See Section 9.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Information you give us
Account information. If you create an account, we collect:
- your email address;
- a password. The password is handled by our authentication provider. We never see or store it in readable form.
- whether your email address has been confirmed;
- the date your account was created;
- your account status, for example active or suspended, and your role, for example student or moderator.
Profile information. If you set up a profile, we collect what you choose to provide:
- a display name;
- an optional profile photo, stored as a small thumbnail image, or an avatar color;
- your class year, home campus, and major or minor;
- your gender, which you choose from a list, describe in your own words, or answer "Prefer not to say";
- a short "About you" bio;
- interest tags;
- your profile visibility setting.
We also record the version and date of the Terms of Use and Community Rules you agreed to.
Content you post. We collect the content you submit through the App, including:
- messages you post in Rutgers Global, together with the time posted and the name, color, and tags displayed with them;
- reports you file about other users or content, including the reason, any note you add, and a copy of the reported content as it appeared when you reported it;
- users you block;
- messages you send to us, for example support requests or feedback.
2.2 Information stored only on your device
Some information is stored only on your device and is not sent to our servers. This includes:
- your saved classes and course sections;
- your favorite bus stops and bus notification settings;
- your selected campus and level;
- your App preferences, for example appearance and allergen settings.
This information remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App.
Location. If you grant permission, the App uses your device's location to sort bus stops by distance and similar features. Your location is used on your device for those features. We do not store your location on our servers or use it to track you. You can turn off location access at any time in your device settings.
Notifications. If you allow notifications, reminders such as bus alerts are scheduled on your device.
Photos. If you choose a profile photo, the App accesses only the photo you select. It reduces the photo to a small thumbnail, and only that thumbnail is stored with your profile.
2.3 Information collected automatically (analytics)
When you use the App, our analytics providers automatically collect information about how the App is used. This includes:
- Usage events. For example, screens opened; features used, such as adding or removing a favorite class or bus stop, opening a dining hall, or opening Rutgers Global; and responses to in-App prompts.
- An install identifier. This is a random identifier created when you install the App. It is stored on your device and is not linked to your name, email address, or account. If you uninstall and reinstall the App, a new identifier is created.
- Device identifiers. Google Analytics creates its own app instance identifier. On Android, it also collects your device's advertising ID, which you can reset or delete in your device settings. We use these only for analytics, not to show you ads.
- App and device information. For example, the App version, device model, operating system and version, language, and the campus you selected.
- Session recordings. These are records of your in-App activity, including screens viewed, taps, and scrolling, used to understand how the App is used and to diagnose problems. Fields containing sensitive information, such as your email address, password, and name, are masked so that they are not captured.
- Google signals. We have turned on Google signals in Google Analytics. If you are signed in to a Google account and have turned on Ads Personalization there, Google may associate the App's analytics data with information from your Google account, such as age range, gender and interests. We see this only as aggregated reports across many users, never tied to you. You can turn this off in your Google account (see Section 9).
- Engagement. For example, when you first open the App, how often and how long you use it, and when you update or remove it.
- Performance and diagnostics. For example, crashes, errors, memory, CPU, and battery usage.
- Network information. For example, IP address and approximate region, as logged by our service providers when your device connects to them.
We use this information for analytics, troubleshooting, security, and improving the App. We do not use it for advertising. We have not linked Google Analytics to any advertising account, and the App shows no ads.
2.4 Information from third-party sources
The App displays public information from third-party sources, including:
- class and schedule information;
- dining hall menus and nutrition information;
- bus routes and arrival predictions.
To fetch it, the App may contact those sources directly from your device. Those sources may receive standard technical information such as your IP address, under their own privacy policies.
3. How we use information
We use information to:
- provide, operate, and maintain the App and its features;
- create and manage your account, confirm your email address, and authenticate you;
- display your public profile and your posts to other users, as you direct, and help students find classmates, teammates, and friends;
- enforce our Terms of Use and Community Rules, including:
- reviewing reports;
- moderating, hiding, or removing content;
- filtering prohibited content;
- suspending or terminating accounts;
- protect the safety, security, and integrity of the App, our users, and the public, and investigate and prevent fraud, abuse, spam, and illegal activity;
- understand usage, measure performance, diagnose bugs and crashes, and improve and develop the App;
- respond to your requests, questions, and feedback, and send service-related messages such as account confirmation and password reset emails;
- comply with legal obligations, legal process, and lawful requests, and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims;
- carry out any other purpose disclosed to you when the information is collected, or with your consent.
We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for targeted advertising, and we do not use it to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you based solely on automated processing.
4. Content that is visible to others
The App includes community features. Please understand what others can see.
- Your public profile is visible to other signed-in users, unless you hide it. It includes your display name, photo or avatar, class year, home campus, major, gender (unless you choose "Prefer not to say"), bio, and tags.
- Messages you post in Rutgers Global are visible to anyone using the App, including signed-out visitors. Each message is shown with your display name, avatar color, and selected tags.
- Moderators can see content that has been reported or flagged, reports filed about it, and related account information needed to enforce our rules.
Once you share content, other users may copy, screenshot, save, or share it outside the App. Deleting the content in the App, or its automatic expiration, cannot undo that. See Section 8.
5. How we disclose information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We disclose information only as described below.
5.1 Service providers. We use third-party companies that process information on our behalf to operate the App. They may only use it to provide services to us and must protect it. Currently they include:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Google LLC) | Account sign-in and authentication, account email delivery, server functions, and website hosting |
| Google Analytics for Firebase (Google LLC) | App usage analytics |

We may change service providers from time to time.
5.2 Other users. As described in Section 4, information you post, and your public profile, is shared with other users at your direction.
5.3 App stores. Apple and Google process information under their own privacy policies when you download the App, rate it, or interact with their platforms.
5.4 Legal and safety reasons. We may access, preserve, and disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is reasonably necessary to:
- comply with law, regulation, subpoena, court order, or other legal process or governmental request;
- enforce our Terms of Use, Community Rules, or other agreements, or investigate potential violations;
- detect, prevent, or address fraud, security, or technical issues;
- protect the rights, property, or safety of the Company, our users, or the public, including in emergencies involving a risk of death or serious bodily injury.
5.5 Business transfers. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, receivership, sale of assets, or similar transaction, information may be transferred as part of that transaction. It will remain subject to the commitments in this Privacy Policy, or a successor policy that is at least as protective, unless you consent otherwise.
5.6 Aggregated or de-identified information. We may use and share information that has been aggregated or de-identified so that it cannot reasonably be used to identify you. One example is the total number of users.
5.7 With your consent. We may share information for other purposes with your consent or at your direction.
6. Data retention
We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, or as required by law.
| Data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Rutgers Global messages | Automatically deleted about 5 days after posting. They may be deleted sooner if removed by you or a moderator. |
| Account and profile | Until you delete your account. |
| Reports and moderation records | As long as reasonably necessary for safety, enforcement, and legal purposes. This includes reports filed about you, suspension records, and moderator actions, and may extend beyond deletion of the related account. |
| Reports you file | May be retained after you delete your account, as part of our safety records. |
| Analytics data | According to our analytics provider's retention settings, generally no longer than needed for analytics and troubleshooting. |
| Backups and logs | Copies may persist for a limited period in backups and system logs maintained by us or our service providers before being overwritten. |
7. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect information. Examples include:
- encrypted connections;
- access controls;
- authentication handled by a dedicated provider;
- data minimization.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee the security of your information. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for:
- unauthorized access that results from circumstances outside our reasonable control;
- your failure to protect your password or device.
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity under your account. Tell us promptly at support@ibunno.com if you believe your account has been compromised.
8. Information you choose to share; your responsibility
You decide what to share in the App, and you share it at your own risk. Do not post, or put in your profile, any information you do not want to become public. This includes:
- your phone number, home or dorm address, or class schedule and location;
- your social media accounts or financial information;
- government identification numbers;
- passwords;
- private information about yourself or others.
We are not responsible or liable for:
- any information you choose to disclose to other users, whether in the App, in your profile, in messages, or outside the App;
- how other users, or anyone else, use, copy, share, or misuse information you disclose;
- any communication, meeting, transaction, or relationship between you and any other user, whether online or offline;
- any loss, harm, or damage that results from your sharing of information or your interactions with other users.
We do not run criminal background checks or identity verification on users. Confirming an email address does not verify a person's identity, age, or intentions. Use caution and common sense in all interactions, especially before meeting anyone in person.
The full disclaimers, limitations of liability, and release that apply are in our Terms of Use.
9. Your choices and rights
Account and profile. You can review and update your profile in the App at any time. You can hide your profile from other users.
Deleting your account. You can delete your account from within the App (Settings → Account → Delete account). When you do, we delete:
- your authentication account;
- your profile and public profile;
- your Rutgers Global messages;
- your blocks;
- your account status records.
These are deleted within a reasonable period, except as described in Section 6.
Device permissions. You can turn off location, photo, and notification access at any time in your device settings. Some features may stop working.
Analytics. Deleting the App removes its install identifier. On Android, you can reset or delete your device's advertising ID in your device settings. To stop Google from associating your activity with your Google account (Google signals), turn off Ads Personalization at myadcenter.google.com, and review or delete that activity at myactivity.google.com. You may also contact us to ask about limiting analytics associated with your device.
Emails. We send only service-related emails, such as account confirmation and password reset. We do not send marketing emails.
State privacy rights. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- know or access the personal information we hold about you;
- correct inaccurate information;
- delete your personal information;
- receive a portable copy of your information;
- opt out of the sale of personal information, targeted advertising, or certain profiling. We do not engage in these activities.
- not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.
States with such laws include California, New Jersey, and others.
To make a request, email support@ibunno.com with the subject "Privacy Request." We may need to verify your identity, for example by confirming control of your account email, before we act. You may use an authorized agent where permitted by law. If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision. If your appeal is denied, you may contact your state attorney general.
Do Not Track. The App does not respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals. We do not use your data to track you across other companies' apps or websites for advertising. Google signals, described in Section 2.3, is controlled by the settings in your Google account.
10. International users
The App is intended for users in the United States. Information is processed and stored in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those of your country. If you use the App from outside the United States, you consent to the transfer and processing of your information in the United States.
11. Age requirement
The App is intended only for people who are at least 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that someone under 18 has provided us personal information, we will delete it and terminate the related account. If you believe a minor has provided us information, contact us at support@ibunno.com.
12. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by reasonable means. Examples:
- updating the "Last updated" date;
- providing notice in the App;
- asking you to review and accept the updated policy before you continue posting.
Your continued use of the App after the effective date of the update means you accept it.
